Changing your password

How to change the password you sign in with from Team & alerts, what the form checks, and why it signs you out of every session, including this one.

You can change your own password at any time from inside the app. Open Settings in the left-hand navigation, choose Team & alerts, and find the Your password section. Everyone in the workspace has it, whatever their role, and it only ever changes the password of the person signed in. There is no way for an admin to set someone else's password from here.

The form has three boxes: Current password, New password and Confirm new password. Fill all three and choose Update password; the button stays greyed out until each box has something in it. The new password must be at least 8 characters, the two new entries must match, and it must be different from the one you have now. Your browser flags a new password that is too short before anything is sent; for the other two, a message just above the button says what is wrong, and nothing is changed.

You need to know your current password to set a new one. If you type it wrong, the form says Your current password is incorrect, and you can try again. Attempts are limited to 10 every 15 minutes per person, after which the form asks you to try again later. That limit is there so a session left open on a shared computer cannot be used to guess your password. If you have forgotten your current password, sign out and use Forgot password? on the sign-in page instead: enter your email address there and you are sent a link to set a new one.

When the change goes through, StackTrackr signs you out straight away and takes you back to the sign-in page, where you sign in again with your new password. The change signs out every session you are signed in to, not just this one: any other browser or device where you were signed in is signed out on its next action in the app. Other people in your workspace stay signed in. That makes changing your password the quick way to cut off a session you no longer trust.

The change also cancels any unused password reset link we have emailed you, so a link sent before the change cannot be used to set a different password afterwards.

One thing to know: while your workspace is over its plan's tool limit, the settings pages are paused and Team & alerts sends you to Plan & billing instead, so you cannot change your password from here until the account is back within its allowance. Forgot password? on the sign-in page is still there if you need it. Either way, StackTrackr never stores the password itself, only a one-way hash of it.
